Yang Liping is one of the most famous dancers in mainland China. Her work continues to combine and re-imagine the diversity of the country’s contemporary and ancient traditions. These dancers are all from Yunnan province, who used to be farmer in their village, and Yang brought them out from the village, trained them to be dancers.
This photo captured the moment they were playing drum, some of the drums are 3 meters high, and carried from the border of China and Burma.
Hanami and Shy Geiko (work 5) symbolize for me two different aspects of Japanese traditions. Hanami, cherry blossoms viewing, is very public. Japanese people do not spare any effort or money to look their best for this Spring event. The 4 ladies, in magnificent kimonos and very traditional hairdos and makeup, are happily posing for a selfie just outside the shop where they all rented their kimonos before wandering in the streets of Higashiyama in Kyoto. The contrast between the very modern phone, the selfie pose and the attire is speaking about a society where the ways of an ancient culture go along with modernity.
